No on Prop 8

I don't often post anything political on this blog. Ok - I never post anything political. Except for maybe that my daughter wants to be president when she grows up.

But, I feel very strongly about one California proposition in particular and it's Prop 8. I want to say VOTE NO ON PROP 8!!!!

Prop 8 states: "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex couples to Marry. Changes the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California. Provides that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

This bill eliminates a RIGHT of PEOPLE in California. I have many gay and lesbian friends. And many are in loving and extremely long term relationships. I was honored to be able to attend the wedding of one of my friends. Another one is getting married in just a few weeks.

Saying yes to Prop 8 would take away the right of same-sex couples to be married. They would still have "domestic partnerships" however marriage and domestic partnerships are NOT the same in the eyes of the law.

I have a dear friend who has been with her partner for 17 years. They are two wonderful women, who work, who take care of their family and who love each other completely. They have two sons, one of which is her brother's son and they have guardianship. They have guardianship because her brother and straight wife, now ex-wife, are totally and completely fucked up. My friend provides a stable, loving, home and has taken care of him since he was very young. Who is ANYONE to say that this isn't a family that deserves to have the right to marry?

As a side note - did you know that interracial marriage wasn't completely legal until 1967? As an example, can you imagine taking away the right of marriage between a Caucasian man and an Asian woman AFTER they had already been married? Just because some people believe that people should only marry their same race... This proposition is not that dissimilar.

Even Google has come out opposed to Prop. 8.

So, if you are in California - VOTE NO ON PROP 8!!!! We are in America, let's not take away rights already given for anyone.

(also, if you disagree with me - I respect that - please feel free to leave comments - I don't mind a good debate.)

It's the support of people like you that means so much to us.

I'm from Canada, and we've had marriage since 2004. I can't imagine not having the option now... it's so blatantly unfair and discriminatory.

Thank you, and keep up the good fight.

Preach it sister! I can't imagine trying to pass anything that eliminates rights for anyone. And the whole "domestic partnership" arrangement is completely NOT the same. It smells of the "separate but equal" proposition from not too long ago.

Kansas won't even consider gay marriage... heck they are still arguing over teaching evolution!

Keep up the fight for what you believe in!

Good for you for posting this. Wish I were still living in California to cast my vote.

Well said! And regardless of how anyone in California feels about same-sex marriage, they should think long and hard about what kind of precedent would be set by a Proposition that amends the state constitution to remove a right. What's next? A move to revoke freedom of speech?

Actually this proposition does not take away rights for anyone, but it if it doesnt pass it will eliminate parental discresion and force the teaching of same sex relationships to kindergartners. also it will make it so that free speech will no longer be free speech at church what is now taught as correct for marraige will no longer be able to be taught therefore removing our right to religious freedoms. we on the oposite side have far more to lose if it doesnt win same sex unions are already equal in their rights to those who are male female marrieds. if prop 8 doesnt pass do that give you now a pass to marry your sister... syblings marrying syblings.. where will it end. childrens live will be turned upside down and children will be sexualized much earlier, there is no doubt. vote yes on prop 8!!!!

Proposition 8 protects the family as the fundamental unit of society. All children have the RIGHT to grow up with the guiding influences of mother and father. Sadly, many children are denied one or both parents; however, this does not mean everything possible shouldn't be done to provide children with this RIGHT.

Also, it is the RIGHT of every religion to preach what it believes. However, in Canada and states where same-gender marriage is allowed, many religious people have been fined for exercising their RIGHT to religion and refusing to support same-gender marriages.

What I've tried to make clear here is that the rights of families and religion have been infringed upon by laws to support the rights of those engaging in same-gender marriage. What right is greater? That of religion and families? Or the rights of those whose very practice would eventually lead to the extinction of mankind?

This is a quote from Republican California Supreme Court Chief Justice, Ronald George:

"Finally, affording same-sex couples the opportunity to obtain the designation of marriage will NOT impinge upon the religious freedom of any religious organization, official, or any other person; no religion will be required to change its religious policies or practices with regard to same-sex couples, and no religious officiant will be required to solemnize a marriage in contravention of his or her religious beliefs."

People, please. When in doubt about something, just do a simple Google search. We're in danger of taking away people's rights here. Don't listen to the lies. Find out the truth for yourself.

Thanks Jexmarter -

I could not have said it any better myself.

In addition to teaching in schools. In CA, Parents ALWAYS have a right to determine what their children learn - especially in regards to sex education. That is IF the schools even decide to teach it. Shoot - I even have approve allowing my child watch a PG movie in class.

But almost certainly, there is a child with two mommies or two daddies in the classroom. Even if parents don't want their kids to know about same-sex marriage - they will be exposed to it somewhere unless they choose to homeschool. At which time, the point is moot.

If someone doesn't want their child to learn about same-sex marriage in school - then don't sign the paper when it comes home. It's really as simple as that.

It is amazing to me that there are so many people that are willing to vote in this country, yet never do any research to back it up! Thank you "jexmarter" for providing the quote regarding the lack of changes regarding religion, and church rights.
I have been married in California since July 11, and, to my knowledge, no one has been negatively affected. Please, please spread the word...!!
